How do I add observations?
An observation is your interpretation (as a researcher) of something that happened in the world of the participants of a user study.
Example: You might hear a participant curse when he tries to use a function in your product. In that case, you might think "User is
#frustrated while he uses feature X of our product".
This is your interpretation, not the reality. But: Never mind, it's something that you'll want to work with, nothing less.
Studies, Observations, and Themes in UX research
When you run a user study, the number of data points that result from your research grows quickly. We thought about how we could make software to help you get through this mountain of information and get to the findings you need to be successful.
With Insights, you can cut 50% of the time that you need to process the results from your studies. It allows you to create studies, collect the observations you make during those studies, then slice and dice the observations to find patterns and recurring themes.
You can tag every observation with
#hashtags, just as you would do it on Twitter or other social networks:
See what happens in the screenshot above? The text that the researcher wrote for her observation contains two hashtags. The system has detected them and assigned them to the observation.
As a researcher, you can group and filter your observations based on those tags. Suddenly, you will see patterns in the tags. You will see recurring themes emerge from your data. The computer stimulates your brain to make sense of the seemingly messy data. You see what you need to see to be successful.
Adding a piece of text as an observation
Go into a particular user study, choose the "Observations" tag and click on the "Add observation" button. A new observation will be added to the list of observations that you see. Fill out the text of that observation, adding some #hashtags if you want. Press "Enter" to finish writing that text.
Adding an observation to a photo
Go into a particular study. Choose the "Evidence" tag to see all the photos that you uploaded into that study. Click on one photo to see it full size. Click on a particularly interesting detail in that photo. Insights will add a marker to that detail and will allow you to write an observation on the right-hand side, next to the photo. Add #hashtags to the text of your observation so that you'll be able to use the Theme Builder, later, to make sense of all these observations.
